Getting Started with INTERACT
This tutorial provides a step-by-step guide to the foundational elements of INTERACT, covering installation, project creation, video data import, and a general overview of its features.

Getting Started with INTERACT
This tutorial will guide you through the basic steps of using INTERACT, from installation to importing video data, and provide an overview of its features and tools.
What is INTERACT?
INTERACT is professional software developed by Mangold International for observational research. It is widely used to collect, manage, analyze, and visualize behavioral data from video and audio recordings. Used by over 80% of the top 100 universities worldwide, it offers a powerful and flexible platform for various research applications.
Installing INTERACT
- Download the software: Visit the Mangold International website and download the appropriate INTERACT installer for your operating system (Windows or macOS).
- License: INTERACT requires a license key. This is usually a USB dongle, but network licenses and license codes are also available.
- CodeMeter Runtime: macOS users must install the CodeMeter Runtime kit from WIBU Systems for license communication.
Creating a New Project
- Start INTERACT: Once installed, launch INTERACT. You might be prompted to choose between Multimedia Coding or Live Observation. Choose Multimedia Coding if you’ll be working with video or audio recordings.
- New Document: Click on “Start - File - New” to create a new, empty document. This document will store your observational data.
- Define Codes (Optional): If you have a predefined coding system, you can enter your codes into a Code Definition file. This will make the coding process more efficient.
Importing Video Data
- Open Media Files: Click “Start - File - Open” or drag and drop your video files (e.g., MP4, MOV, AVI) directly onto the INTERACT document.
- Video Window: INTERACT will open a video window for each imported file. You can resize and arrange these windows on your screen.
Familiarizing Yourself with INTERACT
- Timeline Chart: Explore the Timeline Chart to visualize your coded data. It displays codes over time and provides instant statistics.
- Coding Panel: Get acquainted with the Coding Panel. It lists your predefined codes and allows you to log events by clicking on them or using keyboard shortcuts.
- Observation Settings: Take a look at the Observation Settings to customize various aspects of the coding process, such as coding mode, speed control, and comment options.
